Alto a la violencia de género en línea

Organizaciones y medios de comunicación de toda América Latina nos manifestamos en contra de la violencia de género en línea y hacemos un llamado para que más ONGs y compañías de la industria de tecnología se unan en el combate contra la difusión no consensuada de imágenes y videos íntimos en Internet.

No podemos ser indiferentes a este tema. La agresión contra las mujeres en los entornos digitales no solo tiene un impacto negativo individual, se ha tornado en un asunto social que causa estragos en la libertad de expresión y merma la naturaleza libre y equitativa de la red.  También afecta a la innovación y pone barreras para la economía y el emprendimiento femenino.

De acuerdo con una investigación de The Economist Intelligence Unit, la prevalencia de la violencia de género en línea en América Latina es de 91%, la cifra más alta a nivel global después de Medio Oriente.

Los ataques hacia este sector de la población se presentan de diversas formas en estos espacios, siendo algunos de los más recurrentes el discurso de odio, la intimidación y la difusión no consentida de imágenes íntimas, también conocida como NCII (Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery, por sus siglas en inglés). Este último tiene uno de los efectos más agudos sobre quienes lo padecen.

La organización internacional Cyber Civil Rights Initiative revela que 93% de las víctimas experimentan angustia emocional significativa y 82% tiene afectación importante en su vida social y en el trabajo.

En respuesta a esto, en diciembre de 2021, más de 50 organizaciones alrededor del mundo se unieron para lanzar la plataforma StopNCII.org, diseñada para frenar la difusión no consensuada de contenido íntimo en línea de forma segura y privada. La herramienta, gestionada por la organización de Reino Unido, Revenge Porn Helpline, permite marcar imágenes y videos con un código numérico único conocido como “hash”, para que plataformas como Facebook e Instagram puedan frenar su difusión. La víctima siempre está en control, ya que sus imágenes nunca salen de su dispositivo personal y nadie más que ella puede acceder y dar seguimiento a su caso.

A partir del 30 de marzo de este año, StopNCII.org estará disponible en español y portugués, dando nuevas posibilidades de acceso a las mujeres que sufren este abuso en América Latina, incluyendo a sectores vulnerables como las comunidades indígenas y LGBTQ+. Esto se suma a la asesoría psicológica y legal que las asociaciones participantes brindan durante el proceso. Las aquí firmantes hacemos un llamado para que más organizaciones y empresas se sumen a este esfuerzo y se pueda detener esta forma de violencia contra las mujeres en más aplicaciones. Esto no solo tendrá un efecto en las tasas de remoción de contenido NCII, también tendrá un impacto positivo en el proceso psicológico de la víctima, ya que no tendrá que presentar diversos reportes y por lo tanto el desgaste emocional será menor.

También, nos comprometemos e invitamos a otros medios y canales a llevar a cabo más acciones para difundir información sobre ciberviolencia, incluyendo herramientas y mecanismos para reportar contenido que sea considerado violencia de género. Esto permitirá que las mujeres que experimenten abusos sepan cómo actuar oportunamente y se respalden en especialistas y redes de apoyo expertas cuando lo necesiten.

Haremos todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para crear espacios digitales libres de violencia para las mujeres en su diversidad, que les permitan alzar su voz sin temor, intercambiar ideas, encontrar oportunidades de negocio y hacer comunidades fuertes. La violencia de género no es un problema de unos cuantos, trastoca todos los aspectos de la sociedad y, como tal, es nuestra responsabilidad combatirla.
